Q: WHAT IS ELECTROLYSIS?

A: Electrology is the science of permanent hair removal. Using state-of-the-art technology, the electrologist inserts a very fine probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft (keep in mind how tiny hairs are) and a small current of electricity is gently applied to the base of the hair follicle. This process destroys the hair growth tissue. Therefore, the regenerative ability of the hair follicle is permanently eliminated. 

A: Absolutely! You are your own best advocate. When contacting a professional Electrologist, I encourage you to ask plenty of questions. First, you should inquire if the Electrologist holds membership in the state’s professional association, The Kansas Association of Professional Electrologists.  Second, you should ask if the Electrologist adheres to the American Electrology Association’s Standards of Practice and Infection Control Standards. This is your assurance that universal precautions are being taken in the professional’s office. Next, you should ask if the Electrologist attends continuing education events to improve and enhance her knowledge and skills. Finally, up to date, state-of-the art equipment is advised for enhanced electrolysis treatment comfort. Unlike other temporary methods of hair removal, Electrolysis is safe for all areas of the body with the exception of hairs inside the nasal cavity or inside the ears.  Electrolysis does not discriminate against skin or hair types, and is equally effective on light or dark skin, light or dark hairs. 

A: With the most up to date machines on the market, it is now compared to a small sensation of heat, or a small pinch.   Electrolysis treatments are all about timing and intensity. Electrologists can choose between three different methods of treatment, each with its own variation of comfort levels but with the same comfort, effectiveness and permanency. The electrologist will consider your specific needs and design a treatment plan.Another factor of comfort is the type of probe used. There are now a variety of probes to choose from: insulated, non-insulated, one-piece, two-piece, stainless steel, and gold-plated. The electrologist will determine the best option for your type of hair growth and skin, providing you with comfortable, quality treatments.

A: There is no way to say how many treatments it will take to clear an area permanently.  The number of treatments necessary varies with each client.  Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, heredity, hormone function, certain medication and stress influence the treatment program for each individual. It is important to follow the recommended treatment plan to achieve optimum results.

A: Electrolysis is the only true permanent hair removal method and the only permanent treatment recognized by the FDA. It works on every skin type, hair color and everywhere on your body, minus the nose and ear canals. 

A:  The number one thing is stick to the plan you make with your electrologist.  Skipping treatments will only cause it to take longer to clear.  Let your electrologist know if you have had any health changes since last visit.  Drink LOTS of water and hydrate.  Moisturize your skin (no oily lotions) and exfoliate before coming into the office.  Remember to wear sunscreen always and stay out of the sun before and after coming in for treatment.  You can also use numbing cream an hour before coming in the areas that are more sensitive.

A: Stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen.  Don't rub or scratch the area treated.  Stay away from hot baths or hot tubs. Don't use oily lotions.  No deodorant for 24 hours if underarms are done.  No makeup for 24 hours if face is done.  If you have swelling and redness, know that it is natural.  Your body is healing itself already.  It will go away in hours to a couple days usually.  Let your electrologist know if it is longer than that.
